Just Breathe
Today, this week, I give you permission to just breathe.
Breathing is one of the most central, most important, and most vital activities our body performs all the time without us having to be completely aware of it. For the most part, that is quite fortunate so that we can concentrate on other things like voting, and paying bills, and arguing with people we do not understand. However, since it is involuntary, that also means it is easy to take for granted.
"Then the LORD God formed a human from the dust of the ground, and breathed into hir nostrils the breath of life; and the human became a living being." (Gen 2:7 NRS)
"Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live." I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude." (Eze 37:9-10 NRS)
So for at least one week, try this. Do not attempt to be the smartest this week. Do not attempt to be the most beautiful this week. Do not attempt to save the nation this week. Do not attempt to CLEAN ALL THE THINGS! Do not attempt to be perfect this week. Do not even attempt to be best that you can be this week.
Just breathe.
Consider your breath. Make your breaths a little longer and deeper than they usually are. This seems like a simple task, but the difference it can make is gargantuan. Have you wondered how to start working on payer? Breath is the beginning of every prayer.
Breath reminds us that we are human.
Practiced are my sins,
Never gonna let me win,
Under everything,
Just another human being....
-Eddie Vedder-
Breathe in and breathe out, the breath of God.
